Committee Chair Q&A

Want to volunteer for a committee?

We have PLENTY of opportunities to volunteer all year long so please don’t be shy.

  • What do the class parents do?
Three class parents are assigned to each class. The lead class parent is the main point of contact between the class parents and the teacher. That person will communicate directly with the teachers to help plan parties for the school year, help with class field trips, and help organize gifts for the teachers.
  • How are class parents selected?
This process is done by the Class Parent committee that is made up of three volunteers. Selection for class parents is based on but, not beholden to the OPS PTA Standing Rules. Those rules include the class parents being chosen based on service to the PTA, attendance of PTA meetings, volunteering during the school year for the PTA, upholding the PTA's mission and goals, alongside of the work that the committee does to determine which grade has openings, needs class parents etc. Any further questions can be directly submitted to the class parent committee.
  • How do I sign up to be a class parent?
There is a PTA email blast at the end of the school year that will include a link to sign up to be a class parent.
  • Why does the PTA organize lunch?
Oradell Public School does not have a school cafeteria or lunch program, so the PTA offers options to purchase lunches through local vendors and uses this as a fundraising opportunity.
  • Why do we have ice-cream lunch?
Ice-cream lunch is a once a month treat for the children and a fundraising program for the PTA, this is strictly optional.
  • Why can’t I order pizza every other week?
We distribute over 900 slices of pizza per week at OPS. With the high demand of pizza orders the PTA has decided that it would not be possible to change the weekly orders and it would become a logistical nightmare for distribution and ordering. This, combined with the volunteer time, effort and organization to pass out the pizza to the children has resulted in pizza being offered every week. The PTA re-evaluates this program on a yearly basis.
  • Why do we use Calabria and Lab Burger for lunches 4x a week?
We support local Oradell and community vendors and restaurants. These vendors do the ordering, delivery and work on the back end. We have explored other options in regard to bagels and other restaurants, but the delivery and volunteers that would be needed did not fit with the lunch schedules and price points. We are always open to suggestions and lunches are optional.
  • How do I order lunches?
Please visit our website or refer to the PTA email blasts to order lunches.
  • Why should I volunteer?
Whether you have 1 minute or 1 hour, the PTA welcomes all volunteers who are members of the PTA to help support the 36 committees and programs for our children. Folders, field trips, book clubs, PTA technology etc. are all run with volunteers and any help you can give would benefit the programs and committees we create and have for the students of OPS. You do not need to come into the school to help and the PTA offers plenty of opportunities for those interested.
  • How do I volunteer?
Please visit our website, scan the QR code or see our registration link in our weekly PTA email blast. You can also reach out to the committees individually.
  • I want to volunteer but I am a full-time working parent and don’t have much free time, is there anything I can do in the PTA?
Absolutely! We have many programs that run after hours, and on weekends. These do not include in-person volunteering. Please reach out to learn more.
  • Where does the money go?
The PTA is a non-profit organization. The funds that we fundraise go directly to the children in different ways such as: contributing to projects the school is working on (the outdoor classroom and auditorium improvements.) We also fund the PTA grade level grants, which help bring programs like John Marshall weather learning center along with many others. We also fund scholarships for local students, field trips, assemblies, book clubs, author visits, folders for every child & help to fund the school STEM Lab. Please refer to our flow chart on our website.
  • How much does it cost to join the OPS PTA?
$6 for individuals and $11 for a family.
  • How do I sign up for the PTA and have my information be included in the directory?
PTA directory open enrollment is generally open from mid-June through July 31st. You must be a member by 7/31 of the upcoming school year to be included in the directory.
  • Why do I need to join by 7/31 to be included in the directory?
The directory is prepared manually by our volunteer directory committee chairs and this timeframe allows them to gather the necessary information and format the directory.
  • If I join, do I have to go to meetings... join the board...?
No! Although we love to see you, we understand that many folks cannot attend every meeting. These meetings are a chance to hear about the PTA, what we are accomplishing and ways to move forward in our mission and goals and of course to socialize with other parents. You do not have to join the board, go to meetings or even volunteer. Everything regarding the PTA is optional.
  • Who can join the OPS PTA?
Anyone!! A parent, teacher, admin, grandparent, etc.
  • Why am I not getting the PTA Presidents weekly blasts?
Please confirm you are signed up as a PTA member and then check your spam. Also make sure you haven't clicked "unsubscribe" on the emails.
  • How do I know what’s coming up on our PTA schedule?
Please visit our website and refer to our calendar and subscribe or refer to the weekly PTA email blast.
